It doesn't make me unintelligent, or less informed about social issues. I hope this video can inspire at least one young adult and help them realise that they don't need to live up to anyones' expectations in terms of career choice. Thank you for sharing. ------------- WORDS: I am here to tell you that you are not your parents. Many of you watching this are still living at home with one or both parents who are either disapproving of your educational and/or recreational choices or are trying to push you into a future that you don't want. Although the idea that parents only want what's best for their children has existed for generations, I believe that it is only the last couple of generations that have really felt forced into a career or vocational path by their mum and dad. Just sixty years ago the primary focus of post-education was to earn enough money to support your immediate nuclear family, which would usually consist of a mother, father and many siblings after the Second World War. It was enough that a son could finish his education and become a mechanic or greengrocer's assistant, or that a daughter could become a waitress without her family feeling disappointed in her so long as they could both help to support their families. However in today's modern society, the idea of well-paying jobs such as becoming a lawyer or doctor have become glamorised not for their contribution to society but for their generous wage packet. All over the world kids are brought up to believe they want to become doctors or businessmen or women not because they are enjoyable jobs that will reflect their desires but because they earn a lot of money. In an economy that has seen the average price of a house rise to ten times that of an average yearly wage, the idea that a child should undergo an education they do not enjoy in order to be able to buy a house has become acceptable and is having a terrible effect on our young generation. The pressure that adults feel they need to put on their teenage sons and daughters in order for them to get a well-paying job so that they can get a house and seem desirable to a future mate so that they can grow up to be 'happy' is destroying our youth and leading to a massive rise in young adults feeling that they are disappointing their parents by not being 'good enough'. I am here to tell you that as a young adult, you have every right to choose an educational path that makes you happy. I am here to tell you that if you don't feel ready for university at the age of eighteen, there is always time to go back should you ever want to. I am here to tell you that having a well-paid job that is so often glamorised by the media and 'career advisers' at school is not the answer to happiness if it is not what you want to do. I am here to tell you that if you don't want to join the 'family business' or go into the same career path as your parents you are not obligated to. I am here to tell you that as a human being regardless of your age, you have a right to feel comfortable with your gender, sexuality, the way you look, and what career you want to choose without feeling ashamed or a disappointment to anyone around you. I am here to tell you that if you're studying for your exams or in the middle of taking them, you're doing a fantastic job and that so long as you try your hardest, that is the best you can do and that I'm proud of you for that. I am here to tell you that you are not on your way to becoming your own person, but that you already are one. I am here to tell you that you are not your parents. ------------- Follow me elsewhere!
