The Corrie cast was beaten to the Best Serial Drama award by EastEnders but on accepting the prize, Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) paid tribute to Anne Kirkbride, who sadly passed away on Monday. Referring to her character Deirdre Barlow's infamous prison stint back in 1998, he said: 'This is for Coronation Street and this is for the Weatherfield One'. Earlier, the gracious star had said: 'Big thank you to Coronation Street. Without you there would be no Eastenders. Without you and without characters like Ken and Dierdre, we would not be here.' It was a touching moment, deeply appreciated to the assembled Coronation Street cast, who gave him a standing ovation. Deirdre was famously jailed for a total of three weeks after being found guilty of mortgage and credit card fraud after being tricked by her pilot conman boyfriend Jon Lindsay. The nation got behind her campaign to be freed in 1998 - so much so, that despite her being a fictional character, former Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would help to get her freed from prison. Moreover, the tabloids gave out 'Free Deirdre' stickers and T-shirts. EastEnders was the big winners as its stars Danny Dyer and Maddy Hill also picked up top awards at the glitzy event in London's O2 Arena. Danny won the Serial Drama Performance trophy, but still believes his success has come as a surprise to a lot of people. The 37-year-old actor, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, told BANG Showbiz: 'I think a lot of people wanted to see me fail, they didn't think I would last five minutes. 'To play a character that people actually give a f**k about every day is a difficult thing but I love it, I love it.' His co-star Maddy Hill - who plays his on-screen daughter Nancy Carter - won the Newcomer award and admits the show has changed her life 'drastically.' But she added: 'I don't see any downside to fame because it ends when I leave work ... Especially if I wear my hair down and a hat. No one knows it's me.' Dermot O'Leary hosted the National Television Awards and the winners were chosen by the public in a nationwide poll. Meanwhile, in the ceremony, William Roache brought his Coronation Street co-stars to tears with an emotional tribute to Anne. The 81-year-old actor spoke at length about his 'soulmate' Anne, who died at the age of 60 on Monday following a secret battle with cancer. Success: EastEnders beat Coronation Street to the Best Serial Drama award on Wednesday night He said: 'With her husky voice and trademark spectacles, the nation took Deirdre to their hearts. As Deirdre and Ken, we were soulmates. And despite what was thrown at us we found one another and always made our way back together. 'The nation seemed to want us together and I feel so honoured to have those years with Anne. 'What I remember the best is the vibrant warmhearted person who brightened our days and would gave us all a hug. 'Corrie brought Anne and her husband, David, together and he has lovingly been at her side since. Together with Anne's brother John and his family, David and their Coronation Street family and especially Beverly Callard who was close to Anne in her final days, we would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support. She will be greatly missed by us all.' Kym Marsh was left in tears after his speech while Barbara Knox, who plays Rita looked devastated. The Coronation Street stars had chosen not to walk the red carpet at the ceremony. Earlier in the evening, host Dermot O'Leary said: 'I know you've been through a very difficult time and on behalf of everyone here we are delighted you came. We're all here for you.' And earlier in the day,Kym Marsh, [Michelle Connor] appeared to be deep in thought and holding back tears as she prepared to board her train to London. Carrying her outfit for the evening's ceremony in one hand, as well as a coffee, the actress wheeled a small suitcase in the other. She was joined by close pal and co-star Antony Cotton [Sean Tully], who appeared deep in thought as he followed close behind. Michael Le Vell, [Kevin Webster], Georgia May Foote, [Katy Armstrong] and Brooke Vincent, [Sophie Webster] were just some of Weatherfield's famous residents who ventured out.
