The sac is a tough membrane which protects the baby from injury. The fluid inside contains nutrients for the baby to grow. The baby was still absorbing oxygen through the placenta at the time of birth. “It was a moment that really did, even though its a cliche: we caught our breath. It really felt like a moment of awe,” William Binder, a neonatologist at the hospital, told CBS Los Angeles. “This was really a moment that will stick in my memory for some time.” Soon after the birth, a doctor punctured the sac with his fingers so that the baby could breathe on his own, SFGate reported. The mother was oblivious to the drama until she was shown a picture of her baby snapped by the doctor on his mobile phone hours after the delivery. The baby spent its first few weeks in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
