  • description: Modi is "besharam", "darpok" and "must apologize" to the country for Pahalgam: Satya Pal Malik, the last Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, to Karan Thapar for The Wire. .......................................... In what will seem like an no-holds-barred sharply critical interview, Satya Pal Malik, the last Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has said that Prime Minister Modi is “besharam” (shameless), “darpok” (cowardly) and “must apologize” to the country for permitting Pahalgam to happen. Mr. Malik was also outspokenly critical of Mr. Modi’s failure to attend the all-party meeting or to praise the Kashmiri people for their emotional and powerful response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in his Mann Ki Baat. Mr. Malik said the failure to attend the all-party meeting was a sign of “arrogance” whilst he suggested that Mr. Modi did not praise the Kashmiri response because he benefits politically from permitting a Hindu-Muslim divide to continue in the country. In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mr. Malik, who has also served as Governor in Bihar, Meghalaya, Goa and Odisha, and was Governor in Jammu and Kashmir during the Pulwama terrorist attack of 2019, said that serious intelligence failure and security lapses lay behind the Pahalgam attack. I will leave you to get the details from the interview. However, speaking specifically about the Kashmir security review meetings recently held by Mr. Amit Shah, one of which was just days before the Pahalgam attack, Mr. Malik said that these were not security reviews but more like social gatherings where people meet for lunch and what he called “gup-shup”. Speaking about the present Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, who, in the first instance, is responsible for security, Mr. Malik said he should have accepted moral responsibility and immediately resigned. In the interview, Mr. Malik spoke about the demolition of houses of people who are suspected to be terrorists without any due process whatsoever. He spoke about arrests of up to 2,000 people, again, entirely on suspicion which he believes happened primarily because they are Kashmiri and Muslim and for no other reason. He spoke about the treatment of Kashmiris outside Kashmir. He spoke about hateful comments made by the President of the Hindu Sena. He spoke about the media’s failure to effectively report the actual response of the Kashmiri people. He believes the media has let down the country. I will stop there. You should see the interview for yourself. Mr. Malik speaks almost entirely in Hindi. The questions are mainly in English but there are some in Hindi.
