Team Hungary skier Elizabeth Swaney finished in last place in qualification for the women's ski halfpipe final Monday after two simple runs. The 33-year-old completed both of her runs without falling, but didn't try any tricks. Swaney finished 40 points behind the skier who had the lowest score eligible to qualify for the final. The skier, born and raised in the United States, appears to have worked the qualifying system to reach the 2018 Winter Oympics. International Ski Federation (FIS) ski halfpipe and slopestyle judge Steele Spence told the Denver Post Swaney was able to earn her Olympic berth more from just attending World Cup events as opposed to competing in them. The International Olympic Committee requires that competitors finish in the top 30 at multiple World Cup ski events. Woman's pipe skiing World Cups rarely sees more than 30 competitors, which made it easier for Swaney to get multiple top-30 finishes as required. Swaney officially qualified for the Olympics when she finished 13 out of 15 at last December's World Cup in China, when other top skiers were competing in the Grand Prix at Copper Mountain and Dew Tour at Breckenridge. The system for determining who is eligible for the Olympics is expected to change. "The field is not that deep in the women's pipe and she went to every World Cup, where there were only 24, 25, or 28 women," Spence said. "She would compete in them consistently over the last couple years and sometimes girls would crash so she would not end up dead last. There are going to be changes to World Cup quotas and qualifying to be eligible for the Olympics. Those things are in the works so technically you need to qualify up through the system." After watching Swaney's run, many took to social media to blast the skier and poke fun at her qualifying run.
