- description: Violence erupted Saturday as clashes broke out between police and around 500 members of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) in Manchester, England. The EDL claims they are peacefully protesting Islamic fundamentalism, which they believe promotes terrorism. Police presence was heavy and hundreds of officers clashed almost immediately with the EDL when 500 members attempted to break their lines. Smoke bombs were released and at least three arrests were made. The last rally the EDL held in Manchester was in 2009 when ten people were injured and 48 arrested. Since their inception in 2009, the EDL has been linked to football hooligan gangs and other far-right groups such as the British National Party, the National Front, Combat 18 and Blood & Honour. Last week, the EDL's leader Stephen Lennon was released from jail, after being sentenced to ten months for traveling to the U.S. under someone else's passport.
