- description: Despite the harrowing fact that nine people have been killed attempting to cross the Channel in the last month, families are still risking their lives for the chance of a life in the UK These heartbreaking pictures show a migrant throwing a child over a fence as others cling to the top of a lorry as the Calais crisis deepens. Despite nine people dying in their attempt to cross the Channel in the last month, people are still risking their lives for the chance of a better life in the UK. Last night French police used batons in a desperate bid to stop around 200 asylum seekers from getting to Eurotunnel trains. Riot police armed with batons and CS gas had tried to hold them back further from the terminal but were easily overpowered. Eventually the police formed a human shield to stop the migrants getting onto the platforms. One UK driver said: "It was terrifying. We drove off the train and were met with hundreds of people. "We just locked the doors and tried to drive around them. To be fair to a police they did a good job." Other migrants flooded onto tracks near the village of Frethun in a bid to storm Eurotunnel trains. One Eritrean woman was spotted holding hands with her young daughter as they diced with death crossing tracks. The pair made their way to within several feet of the UK-bound trains before crouching down next to a fence. They avoided being spotted by police and Eurotunnel security guards and later made their way further into the terminal before disappearing from view. It is not known if they made it to the UK. A police source said: "It doesn't stop. We have had to deal with gangs of young men, but also families." Migrants in the squalid Calais camp have spoken of their desperate plight to reach the UK. Each night some walk four hours to try to clamber on trains, risking their lives in the process. Binian Habda, 24, from Eritrea arrived in Europe by boat from Libya - an incredibly perilous trip - and dreams of a better life in the UK. "In our country it’s a war. My friends have children. We want education for them and a better life." Today Prime Minister announced extra sniffer dogs and fencing will be sent to France, and Ministry of Defence land will be used to ease congestion. Speaking in Downing St after chairing a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee, Mr Cameron said the situation was "unacceptable" and that he will be speaking to French president Francois Hollande later today. Mr Cameron said: "This is going to be a difficult issue right across the summer. "I will have a team of senior ministers who will be working to deal with it, and we rule nothing out in taking action to deal with this very serious problem. "We are absolutely on it. We know it needs more work." Meanwhile, Paul Carter, leader of Kent County Council, has met officials from the Home Office to highlight the impact of hundreds of minors arriving unaccompanied at the port of Dover. The number of young migrants in the local authority's care has almost doubled to 605 in the last three months, leaving it with a multimillion-pound funding gap.
