  • description: University of Auckland students protest the new tertiary education budget cuts in response to Finance Minister Bill English's comments that "they can protest, but no one is paying attention to them. They need some Greeks to show them how to do it." The protest was to be peaceful and last 3 hours. Despite the students protesting peacefully, the police continued to make arrests. The new budget cuts means that it will be harder for students from poorer backgrounds to do longer degrees such as engineering, medicine, or postgraduate studies. The new repayment threshold means that many graduates will be struggling to work while paying off their huge student debts. National student debt is now around $12billion. All while the top 10% of earners get tax cuts worth millions from the John Key government.
