Sugar The Pit Bull Saves Toddlers Life

- description: Sugar, a 6-year-old, solid-white pit bull stayed by the side of 2-year-old Colby, after the boy wandered into some woods near their Panola County, Mississipi home. Colby's grandfather Barry believes Sugar saved the little boy. Courtney Ridgeway said that her son Colby was playing in the front yard of their home on the swingset. She and her brother were both watching Colby and she went for a minute inside to take care of her younger son and her brother soon came in also. Within minutes, they realized Colby was gone. Colby's grandfather, Barry, was at first afraid someone kidnapped Colby, but with Sugar not coming when he called, it surprisingly gave Barry hope. "I knew that as long as she didn't come back. I didn't have to worry about it because I knew if we found her, we would find him," said Barry. The boy had wandered off a mile away from his home, following Sugar through ravines and over hills, finally ending up in a ditch. Courtney said her son and their dog, Sugar, are inseparable. "He'll follow Sugar anywhere," she said. Three-hundred people came out for the search and he was found roughly two hours later stuck in the ditch, with Sugar by his side. Colby was found by a father and son pair that had heard Sugar's barking and found the boy. Barry believes Sugar saved the little boy. Barry says two rescuers heard a dog barking and went to check it out, "She was running up to the road and back down to the spot he was at," said Barry. The boy was crying and cold, but alive, thanks to Sugar. Colby's mother described the experience as "probably the worst day of my life." She was very relieved and thankful for the community's tremendous support, and for Sugar. Barry says the pit bull has a motherly instinct and knew to watch the 2-year-old. The two have a special relationship. "Colby's two and a half. He's going to harass her to death," said Barry. "He gets on her back like he's riding her and she'll just sit there and look at me like, 'Please help'," he added, as he laughed. Sugar is a heroine in the eyes of her family. "She is going to be eating deer steak for quite a while," Barry said, "She earned it."
