- description: Apparently due to drunk government surveyors, the US Canadian border got drawn right through the middle of Derby Vermont / Stanstead Quebec, cutting numerous buildings in half. One single family home, for example, is placed right on the border, and its American owner cannot leave via the back door of own his home without being arrested because that would be illegally entering Canada. And the risk isn’t small either. This town and its homes are surveilled 24/7 by CCTV cameras and armed guards from both countries. Even crossing the town’s Main Street, Canusa Street, will get you a $5,000 fine and potential jail time because the border invisibly cuts the street in half. But one place you can cross the border without getting arrested is the town’s local library (Haskell Free Library and Opera House), which is right on the border and can be legally visited by guests from both the US and Canada without passports or visas, making it the perfect venue for tearful international family reunions during the U.S. travel bans.
