- description: New Zealand and Japan contested the first Quarter Final of the Rabobank Women's World Hockey League. The Black Sticks triumphed 3-1 in scrappy affair in Rotterdam. Japan came haring out of the blocks and scored in the first minute of play. Shiho Otsukas' ball into the D deflected off Samantha Charlton into the net for an own goal. The Black Sticks should have equalised three minutes later. Gemma Flynn stormed into the D and found Katie Glynn who rounded Ryoko Oie but couldn't get enough behind the shot and skipper Rika Komazawa cleared off the line Ten minutes before the half time Oie kept Japans' lead intact, a good save to deny Bridget Blackwood from a short corner. The Black Sticks began the second half purposefully and were back only level terms after four minutes. Krsystal Forgesson smashed a reverse stick into the goal after a short corner routine was blocked. Japan nearly went in front again. Akane Shibatas' goal bound shot parried by Bianca Russell. New Zealand edged in front after fifty four minutes. Anita Punt fired a drag flick high and straight into the goal from a short corner to setup a frantic finish. Bianca Russell maintained the Black Sticks lead with a brilliant diving save to deny Shihori Oikawa, whose low drag flick was from the penalty corner was goal bound. New Zealand doubled their advantage from another short corner. Punts' initial drag flick ricocheted off the cross bar. Forgessons' attempt was parried and Charlotte Harrison was on hand to blast in the rebound for her fourth goal of the tournament and a two goal cushion. It wasn't a stellar performance from the Black Sticks but they had enough finishing quality to secure the victory and book a spot in the Semi- Finals.
