Bears are smart. Like, a lot smarter than most people give them credit for. But that doesn't mean they don't still make mistakes — say, winding up trapped inside a massive trash can, for instance. Fear not, wee ursine triplets! Here come some daring humans to the rescue! I've watched this a number of times now, and there are a couple things still really blow me away. One: Who the hell approaches bear cubs when the mother is clearly RIGHT THERE? Sure, that helpful human is in the bed of a truck, but something tells me that wouldn't make a whole lot of difference if mom was in a defensive sort of mood (as new moms are wont to be). Two: those are some damn crafty little bear cubs... nimble buggers, too. You think a human child could ladder its way out of a dumpster like that? Yeah, right. Three Alaska men are being credited with saving a brown bear from drowning. The Peninsula Clarion reports that Dustin Klepacki was floating the Kenai River with his father and their friend last weekend when they came upon the bear cub drowning in a whirlpool. They tried to bump the bear out of the whirlpool, but the water caught their boat and they turned in circles as the bear became more frantic. Finally, the current brought the boat up against the bear, and Dustin's father, Mike Polocz, was able to nudge the bear to slower-moving water. The bear swam to shore. Another friend, Charlie Mettiale, filmed the rescue on his iPhone which has been posted to YouTube, complete with the bear's cries.
