  • description: Please hit "Like" if you support the protest against staff cuts at the University of Sydney. The police only made things a hundred fold worse. The students had not done any harm to anyone, not even damage to the building. I can't express how awful it is to see these well-meaning students, who are just peacefully protesting and standing up for what they believe in, treated in such a barbaric way. What thugs the police were. The look of anguish on the students faces cannot truly be felt or seen by watching this video, it cannot be felt as it was when I stood there and saw this firsthand. Seeing this unfold first hand is truly distressing. A friend who stood next to me was rattled for a good while afterwards. Shame on you Michael Spence for bringing in the police/riot squad unnecessarily.. and shame on you for your cruel and unwarranted attack on staff and students. Not the first time for him to play the bully, I still remember the fiasco with Manning and the USU. You have brought this fine university into disrepute. -=-=-=-=-=- To the police who are commenting here - I am not "anti-cop" or anything like that. I have some sympathy for you guys as I know it is a tough job and you get thrown into very difficult situations. But having seen this first hand I am very unhappy as what I saw was not a proportional response to what the students had done.. ie. pretty much nothing, and at most minor mischief. -=- Notes & Thoughts -=- 1. The students have done nothing illegal. This is a publicly accessible space. It is an office building on their own campus. No locked gates or anything like that 2. They did NOT enter the building. I have checked other footage and can now confirm this. It is reasonable for students to access campus offices 3. They had not harmed anyone, nor had they damaged any property prior to this event 4. I heard no evidence of any warning being given to students to leave.. just pounce then rough 'em up 5. By my reckoning the students had been there less than a minute before being pounced on. So this can't be called loitering, and considering they had not entered the office building (a building on their campus I remind you) and it is a publicly accessible area, this cannot be considered trespassing. Also, they had not damaged property and any suggestion that they intended to do so remains presumptuous.
