Footage of the attack was aired by a regional news channel not long after. The attack on W M K Bandara, 32, came a day after a mob of Tamil activists roughed up a Lankan monk and a student of Archaeology from Delhi on a visit to Thanjavur. Bandara was part of a group of 19 pilgrims returning from a visit to Bodh Gaya in Bihar. The pilgrims were getting off Tamil Nadu Express at around 7.20 am when three men lunged at Bandara, who was wearing his monk's robes. He tried to escape, but the attackers chased him, caught him and slapped him around. They also rained blows on fellow Lankan Vangeesa, 70. Except a woman, a man, and a few elderly pilgrims, none at the railway station tried to rescue them. By the time Railway Police, alerted by porters, rushed to platform number six, the gang was gone, but not before announcing that the attack was a revenge for Tamils killed in Sri Lanka. The monk suffered a blunt injury his left leg and complained to the police that he lost his purse containing Rs 30,000 during the attack. The pilgrims have since been ferried to the Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Centre at Egmore near the station. The police have identified the attackers from footage aired by Sun News. The news crew claimed that they had received a call about such an attack and were rushing to the spot as it happened. The CCTV, however, did not capture the attackers entering the railway station. The Railway Police have asked the state police and the IRCTC for details about movement of Sri Lankans in and out of Tamil Nadu so as to remain alert when passengers are at railway stations. Lanka's Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Karunathilake Amunugama said Colombo has lodged a formal request with the Indian authorities in this connection. Sri Lanka's concerns arose after two successive attacks against Buddhist monks and a group of pilgrims. Meanwhile, Champika Ranawaka, a minister from JHU party, advocated banning Tamil Nadu-origin travellers in Sri Lanka and insisted that Lankans must also be advised against travelling to Tamil Nadu. PTI Another Lankan monk attacked : A Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka was assaulted by three unidentified persons on board the Tamil Nadu Express, just as it arrived at Chennai Central Railway Station on Monday. This is the second such attack in three days, the first being on a monk at the Big Temple in Thanjavur on Saturday. The government railway police (GRP) have intensified checks on all trains and tightened security in stations across the State to prevent similar incidents from recurring. According to police, 19 tourists from Sri Lanka had left for Bodh Gaya on March 3 and were returning to Chennai on Monday. Among them, was W.M.K. Bhandara (33), a monk from Kandy. They were in the S-6 compartment. The train chugged into platform six of the station at around 7.15 a.m. "Just as it came in, three persons — one of whom was wearing a cap and sporting a beard — jumped into the coach and started attacking the monk clad in saffron robes," said a vendor. The other Sri Lankans in the compartment tried to stop the men and raised an alarm. GRP officers who were on another platform, rushed to their aid, but the men had fled by then. The police said the attack on Mr. Bhandara had been quite brutal. "They slapped the monk, hurled abuse at him and hit him on the leg with a blunt object," an officer said.
