- description: In the latest round of Greenpeace's PR war with oil company Shell, members of Greenpeace Belgium planted two remote controlled flags in the winner's podium at the Shell-sponsored F1 Belgian Grand Prix held at the Francorchamps motor racing circuit in Spa on August 25. As a trophy was presented to winner Sebastien Vettel, the first flag was activated, reading "SaveTheArctic.org". As the first flag was taken down by a security attendant a second flag popped up across the podium. Shortly afterwards, two Greenpeace climbers attempted to abseil down the podium to unfurl another banner, one of whom was stopped by security. Greenpeace stated that the action was designed to protest Shell's plans for arctic drilling, with the aim of causing great embarrassment to the energy giant. The oil company is investing heavily in Russian and Alaskan mineral exploitation, a strategy that the campaigners say is causing heavy environmental damage.
