George Square had been filled with pro-independence activists on Thursday night and was seen as a centre point of the Yes campaign. Singing 'Rule Britannia', the supporters of the No campaign set off red coloured fire crackers and waved Union Jack flags, with one arguing with a police officer over his right to stay on the square because he had lost two British army soldier friends in the Iraq war. With tensions high, police kept opposing political forces apart. Chalk messages of 'no surrender' were left in front of the Glasgow City Chambers building by the unionists, a famous protestant phrase from the troubles in Northern Ireland.
