- description: As the annual mating season for giant pandas comes, two pairs of giant pandas “Yi Bao” and “Jin Xin”, “Lu Lu” and “Zhen Zhen” managed to mate naturally at Bifengxia Panda Base. The vice- director of Bifengxia reserve center, Luo Bo, said this is the first time “Jin Xin” mated naturally this year. The male panda “Yi Bao” mounted “Jin Xin” third times, and copulation time lasted 1 minute and 20 seconds. The copulation time of “Lu Lu” and “Zhen Zhen” lasted 7 minutes and 45 seconds, which is the longest time on record of this year. The female pandas are only fertile once a year for one to three days between March and May. When ovulation occurs, female panda repeatedly reveals the signs - bleat, chirp, tail up, backwards walk, to show she is in heat. Bamboo poles are used during the mating process by keepers to guide the giant pandas, to ensure mating success. In 2015, there are 27 female giant pandas of CCRCGP in captive breeding programs, and 9 female giant pandas have mated successfully.
