  • description: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted the club did not intend to "hurt" Newcastle with their pursuit of Toon midfielder Yohan Cabaye. Magpies boss Alan Pardew slammed the Gunners boss over the timing of their supposed £10m bid for the France international, which came hours before their disastrous defeat to Manchester City. Wenger has also received a great deal of criticism over the north London outfit's lack of transfer activity this summer - despite their alleged £70m war chest - which increased further following Aston Villa's 3-1 victory over the Gunners in their Premier League opener. But the Frenchman has hit back at critics, insisting that he did not mean to offend Newcastle and that the club should not be rebuked over their transfer policy this season. "There is nothing to explain [about Cabaye]," Wenger said. "We don't want to hurt anybody, not Newcastle, not anybody. "You can't reproach us on one side for not buying and yet on the other side when we try to buy to reproach us as well. That is a bit contradictory. "I won't explain to you what happened. It is not down to me to explain to you everything I do. It is impossible. "If we do a transfer we will announce it. We always inform you. As for the rest, you have to leave us to do our own things. "I would just like to reiterate to you that in the last 16 years we have been very successful with transfers - if you look at the players who play tomorrow, they are top quality players, and you should never forget that."
