  • description: New Zealand's capital Wellington was rattled by a strong magnitude 6.5 earthquake on Sunday that broke water mains, smashed windows and downed power lines. A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off New Zealand, jolting the nation's capital but no tsunami alert was issued and there were no reports of substantial damage A camera inside the newsroom of broadcaster TVNZ captured the moment the quake struck, showing workers ducking for cover under their desks as the room sways. Police said there had been minor structural damage that had left parts of the city without power. There have been no reports of injury and no tsunami. Firemen cleared suspect buildings as a precaution. "It just kept getting bigger and bigger and then it got to a point where we were like, 'Oh, great. We've got to run,'" said one man. In supermarkets, food and groceries were thrown from the shelves. At the city port, a crack appeared across the wharf following the quake. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck under the Cook Strait 57 kilometres (35 miles) southwest of Wellington and 10 kilometres (6 miles) underground. Wellington's Civil Defence Controller, Bruce Pepperell, said there had only been minor injuries reported so far. "There are a lot of people trapped in lifts, obviously, but I'm not aware of any significant casualties at this stage," he said. New Zealand is part of the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" that receives regular seismic activity. A severe earthquake in the city of Christchurch in 2011 killed 185 people and destroyed much of the city centre.
