- description: An abandoned Soviet military base called Vogelsang stands 65 km (40 miles) north of Berlin and remains hidden in the forest since Moscow's troops withdrew in 1994, Wednesday. The Soviet village covered once around 2,000-hectare and was inhabited by more than 15,000 soldiers and their families. Vogelsang's construction began in 1951 and it made into one of the largest Soviet garrisons outside the former Soviet Union with around 550 residential buildings, a school and a gym. The Soviet village also featured warehouses for atomic weaponry, anti-aircraft missiles, tanks and many other all-terrain vehicles.
