- description: Lata Mangeshkar Pays Tribute To Mehdi Hassan Veteran Pakistani ghazal and classical music maestro Mehdi Hassan passed away today in Karachi, Pakistan at 12.22pm. He was 84. Hassan had been suffering from lung, chest and urinary tract disorder for a few years and was in hospital in the ICU for quite some time. The maestro had expressed his wish to meet Bollywood legends Lata Mangeshkar, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan while in hospital. Born on July 18, 1927 in Luna, Rajasthan, India, Hassan worked in a bicycle shop when he got a break to sing for Radio Pakistan in 1957. Later, he did playback for Lahore's film industry, Lollywood. His soulful voice resonated in songs like Ranjish hi sahi, Patta patta, boota boota and Kab ke bichhare, among many others. He had devoted fans and followers in Bollywood, including some of the musical greats. Known as the King of Ghazal, he had received several Pakistani awards, a Nepali award and also India's Saigal Award.
