- description: The series is called Music of the Spheres. The way in which space sound is recorded is by way of recording the electromagnetic waves of each object and converting them to audible wavelengths. This is what Voyager did under the direction of the great Frederick Scarf. His amazing life is written about here: http://articles.latimes.com/1988-07-20/news/mn-5831_1_soviet-space Many years ago, I was in Prague with Marnie Breckenridge and we went to Johannes Kepler's house. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) published his work Harmonices Mundi, in 1619. This work, in which he attempted to explain the harmony of the world, was a series of five books and contained what is known today as his third law. The work was founded on geometry, from which Kepler derived first a theory of musical harmony and then a cosmology of the heavens and the earth. Kepler was attempting to find common rules between music and movement in the solar system. His music of the spheres is based on the relative maximum and minimum angular velocities of the planet measured from the sun. Using his theories, Kepler allotted to the planets musical intervals and musical motion. Kepler describes these ideas in Harmonice Munde as his attempt "to erect the magnificent edifice of the harmonic system of the musical scale . . . as God, the Creator Himself, has expressed it in harmonizing the heavenly motions." We used the actual sounds of Neptune taken from Voyager 1. Dr Fredrick Scarf,my mentor in astrophysics in the 1980's was one of the co creators of the Voyager, in his capacity as Chief Space Scientist for TRW.We often spoke of the music of space and he urged me in 1983 to create music to the planets. Now that time has come.
