Woman weeps in apparent bride kidnapping in Kazakhstan

The young woman screams as she is pulled from the car while upbeat pop music plays and women throw confetti. It is believed the woman is what is known as a "stolen bride" and is being coerced into marriage against her will, the New York Post. According to Kazakh tradition, women are often kidnapped and dressed in a special neckerchief by the girls of the groom's family. They need to accept the neckerchief to consent to the traditional marriage, which often takes days of being locked up and being offered money. "Often the families of the victims agree because the groom pays them a lot of money but it is an outdated and horrific tradition which has no place in modern Kazakhstan," local women's rights activist Anfisa Zuyeva said. "No wonder people think we’re backward and barbaric." Last month a Kazakh television show staged a kidnapping where a young woman was forced into a car on a busy street.
