Greeted by thousands of cheering fans, the legendary actor carried the Olympic torch for 300 metres as part of a relay team, as it made its way through the London Borough of Southwark. Speaking to the assembled press after the relay Bachchan said: "It is a matter of great pride and honour that I have been selected to participate as a torch bearer for this prestigious event, the London Olympics, particularly since I don't live in this country. "I feel that by inviting me here today the people of the UK have honoured my film industry and my country and it's a matter of great pride for us all. I am very proud to be here." Asked how he had prepared for the role, Bachchan said: "I am a man nearing my 70s and at this age running around isn't that easy." The actor said that he is a fan of the Olympics and hopes to attend some of the sporting events: "Oh yes. Most certainly. We have a very strong boxing team from India so we'll be rooting for them. I hope the Indian team win as many medals as possible." Bachchan added that he anticipates a time when India will host the Games, explaining: "I hope so. We have had the Commonwealth Games in India and hopefully we will host the Olympics someday." Describing his feelings about the honours afforded to him in his career he said: "I'm just an ordinary man who works as an actor in films and it is simply my good fortune that I have continued in the film industry for so many years and have such honours bestowed upon me and it is all thanks to the good wishes of the people who have shown such faith in me and supported me throughout my career." Writing about the experience on his blog, the actor said that it would be "a great story to tell the grandchildren". UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and NRI businessman Laxmi Mittal were also among the participants of today's relay team.
