  • description: New experimental version of the "scoreLight" installation for Dancing Machine @ Monaco Dance Forum (10-17 dec 2011) Instead of a circular tracking spot, the laser generates a blob (inspired by Zach Liebermann demos at Flying Tokyo); this blob can "feel" when it is touched using the same laser-sensing technology used in the previous installation. Different sections of the contour react differently to the touch: some are attracted, some repelled, while others are repelled in a direction that produce a global "drive" along the surface. There is no precise computation to track objects: the fact that the blob "attaches" to the surface is an "emergent" phenomena (the repulsive/attractive regions function very much like a zipper, attaching the blob to the contour). From the point of view of the sound generation, the metaphor here is that the blob is a "closed string" whose modes of vibration will produce different sounds. We also worked with Daito to make a special mode in which the blob shape somehow represent a mouth, and depending on its axis of elongation will produce different voice formants. This first result reminded us a little of overtone singing (throat singing)...
