  • description: Backyard scientist pours molten aluminium in a watermelon to see what happens The video, which shows an unexpected - and pretty cool - result - has been viewed almost 250,000 times on YouTube This video might just twist your melon, man. Because if, like YouTube filmmaker TheBackyardScientist, you thought a watermelon would explode when filled with molten aluminium, you're in for a quite a surprise. In the video, the Florida-based experimenter, with assistance from a female friend, punches a hole in the middle of the large, round fruit. Then, after heating the metal - which has a boiling point of 2,519°C - in a propane-powered foundry, the young man pours it into the circular hole. And then, he stands back - in his protective gear - and waits for the inevitable explosion of red flesh, seeds, green skin and little pieces of metal. The only problem is, it doesn't come. But that doesn't mean the end result isn't fruitful. When he cuts open the watermelon, he discovers that he's created a new kind of anthill-type art sculpture. Complaining of the smell, he says: "We had no idea that was going to happen - we thought it was going to explode. "It got in all the seeds. Whoa! Check this out. This is so much cooler than I thought!" He then explains: "So I guess what happened is that the aluminium found little channels inside the watermelon that connected the seed chambers to each other, and this caused this awesome casting to happen, and this is totally unintentional - I thought it was just going to be a stupid watermelon exploding video." The video has been watched almost 250,000 times. To watch it in full, go to TheBackyardScientist's YouTube channel.
