Deputy McDonald said; "Before the summer break the Dáil will discuss Pearse Doherty's bill which would repeal the tax and return any payments made by households this year. "Sinn Féin is clear -- this is the only way to defeat the Family Home tax. "If passed the Sinn Féin bill would axe this unfair tax on the family home and make sure that anybody who paid it this year will be refunded. "There are in one four households with mortgages in distress in this state. Unemployment is at 14% and emigration is at famine levels. This tax on the family home is unjustified and unfair. "Sinn Féin has shown how the government could find alternative funding and likewise how Minister Noonan has some leeway not to introduce this tax and still reach his austerity targets. "There is much public anger at this unfair tax. The draconian powers that revenue has been given to extract it from all income means that the only way to defeat the tax is to support Sinn Féin's repeal bill. "I am calling on all parties and campaign groups to show their support for this bill to axe the tax and refund households who have paid this year.
