- description: Roxys Niteclub (formerly the Hothouse) @ The Waterfront (formerly Molly Maguires), Sligo Rd Ballina - 1990 A short history lesson: In 1975 my parents bought a small Grocery & Bar called Ryders and adjoining house on the Sligo Rd in Ballina Co.Mayo. They demolished and rebuilt a large live music venue called The Georgian which was opened in April 1976. During the 70’s & 80’s, it hosted the biggest names across a wide genre of music but in the late 80’s when The Georgian venue was re-branded to my mums name, Molly McGuires, the live music venue also doubled up as a special night club on Saturdays nights, the Hothouse which first opened Easter week-end 1988. What followed was a few years of madness with NRG DJs John Moyles and Dermot Rice. In 1990 the Hothouse was rebranded to Roxy’s and NRG was joined by Ray Mac and were simply known as Moyles, Mac & Rice! This video clip is from a night in Roxy’s. Enjoy the memories. In the summer of 1991 the now named Waterfront venue was sold to the Murphy Brothers where Alan & Paul ran the well known Longnecks night club for a number of years before selling to Sean Lavelle who continued the tradition. However today, summer 2016, the venue is currently closed which is sad to see but if ever a building could tell a story……..
