- description: The Baikal-Amur Mainline stretches more than four thousand kilometers, making it one of the world's longest railways. Construction work on it lasted for almost a hundred years. The incredibly harsh weather conditions could not stop progress on the line. Even though the BAM lost its funding after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many people who had taken part in making it decided to stay in the towns and villages that were built to house workers. Today some of these folk have even their own businesses. One such person is a hairdresser, who travels from town-to-town on the railway, and her number of clients would make a big city salon green with envy.
