  • description: A professional surfer has uploaded a video of a large group of sharks devouring a whale carcass only metres away from the shore of a beach in Australia's northwest. Rachel Campbell had been surfing with friends and was collecting shells on the afternoon of June 19 when she saw dozens of tiger sharks tearing flesh from a dead whale. "Searching the white sand while crystal water lapped at my ankles, I was shocked to find my worst nightmare dominating the shoreline a mere 400m ahead," the surfer wrote on her blog She said she felt drawn to the feeding frenzy and watched in "horror, fascination and shock" as up to 100 of the predators tore the stricken mammal apart. "Before long I realized there were about 100 sharks in total, some as long as 4m, all in a frenzy over fresh whale flesh," Campbell said. She said she enjoyed the thrill of getting close to the sharks without risking death. "You only had to get knee deep and suddenly you're sharing the same square metre of Indian Ocean with a tiger shark." Campbell didn't give the precise location where the video was shot, only saying it was in Australia's northwest and bordered the Indian Ocean. Despite the dangers Campbell said she will continue to surf at the beach, adding that many of the risks are beyond her control. "I will still surf here though, because it's not about merely surviving this ocean, it's about living and breathing everything that this crazy place has to offer," Campbell wrote. "Let's just hope those sharks are full for now."
