'Don't blush baby': Social media users slam Chris Gayle for 'sleazy' remarks to reporter Mel McLaughlin during Big Bash League... as Channel Ten comes under fire too for calling the cricketer 'smooth' Chris Gayle slammed for 'sleazy' remarks to reporter Mel McLaughlin Gayle made the inappropriate remarks during a Big Bash League match 36-year-old asked McLaughlin out for a drink, and added 'don't blush baby' Gayle's comments were quickly criticised by many on social media West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle has come under fire for 'sleazy' remarks made during an interview with Channel 10 host and reporter Mel McLaughlin during a Big Bash League match. Gayle, who plays for the Melbourne Renegades in the T20 competition, was speaking to McLaughlin after he made a quickfire 41 runs of 15 balls in his team's victory in Tasmania. After answering McLaughlin's initial questions about his performance and on-field partnership with Australian Aaron Finch, the 36-year-old player turned sleazy. 'I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well, that's the reason why I'm here... to see your eyes for the first time,' Gayle said. 'Hopefully we win this game and we can have a drink after, don't blush baby.' McLaughlin, who appeared uncomfortable as a result of Gayle's remarks, said 'I'm not blushing', as she attempted to continue with the interview. After being asked about an injury he suffered, Gayle said he hoped to stay on the field for the remainder of the series, before adding: 'hopefully I can recover and look in your eyes.' The Channel 10 host quickly ended the interview after the West Indian's final comment, wishing him luck for the rest of the tournament. Shortly after the incident, Big Bash League Anthony Everard chief executive released a statement on Twitter. 'I heard Chris' comments and they're disrespectful and simply inappropriate. We'll certainly be talking to him and the Renegades about it. This league is all about its appeal to kids, families and females. 'There's just no place in the BBL - or, for that matter, cricket anywhere - for that sort of behaviour.' Social media reaction to the incident was instant, with many critical of Gayle's 'sexist' behaviour. The issue was exasperated by Channel 10's social media team, which initially tweeted: Gayle to @Mel_McLaughlin: 'Hopefully we can win this game & have a drink after. Don't blush baby'. #smooth #BBL.' 'Really? We're okay with that? I thought it was disrespectful,' Julian O'Brien tweeted. 'Put yourself in the interviewer's position. You'd probably feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. At work,' The Age's sports editor Chloe Saltau wrote. 'Don't highlight a disgraceful episode Channel 10. Gale should be ashamed. Just a reporter trying to to her job,' Reggy Collins tweeted. Channel 10 again chimed in after the initial response, tweeting: Well played to our very own @Mel_McLaughlin for staying professional during the interview. What a pro.' However, not all people agreed the behaviour was out of line, with some blaming 'the fun police' for making an issue out of nothing. 'WOW there are some seriously boring, wound up people. It was a joke. Settle down. Have a sense of humour,' one user, @footy_1717, said. 'Can't believe people having a whinge. Bit of fun. Have a laugh,' another wrote. Donald Trump releases new provocative advertising campaign, paid for by his own fortune. West Indian cricket star Chris Gayle has drawn sharp criticism after making a pass at Network Ten journalist Mel McLaughlin during a post-innings interview. Gayle, 36, had just been dismissed for a quickfire 41 off 15 balls in the Melbourne Renegades' comfortable win over the Hobart Hurricanes, but the live interview quickly steered away from cricket, with the opening batsman asking McLaughlin if she wanted to come out for a drink with him, before quickly adding "don't blush baby". McLaughlin seemed bemused at the proposition, before tersely responding "I'm not blushing" as Gayle awkwardly laughed the comment off. There were audible sniggers from the commentary booth as the interview was happening. The presenter brushed the incident off and attempted to steer the conversation back to the match, and a potential hamstring injury for Gayle. Network Ten came under fire online for a tweet from its Ten Sport account that described Gayle's come-on as "smooth". It deleted the tweet after being criticised. The secretary of Victoria's Trades Hall Council accused the network of joking about workplace harassment. BBL chief Anthony Everard said Gayle's comments were "disrespectful and simply inappropriate".
