- description: Badrinath is a Hindu holy town and a nagar panchayat in Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is the most important of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. The town gets its name from the Holy temple of Badrinath. The tragedy in Uttarakhand is unfolding as the death toll in the flash floods and landslides continues. Over 550 people have been killed and thousands still remain stranded in different parts of the state. However, authorities are also saying that it is still difficult to put a number to those dead or those who may have been stranded. The government has already warned that the body count could rise dramatically as flood waters recede and rescue workers reach isolated areas. The Army has confirmed that although 18,000 people were rescued by road and almost 1,300 by Army and private helicopters from various areas around Uttarkashi, thousands still remain trapped. A helipad has been constructed near the Kedarnath temple and rescue operations will continue on Saturday while Navy divers have been deployed as well.
