A Gatineau, Que. convenience-store owner fought back with bear spray and a spanking when he was confronted by two would-be robbers at his shop Tuesday night. Surveillance video from the store shows two men, faces partially obscured by hoods and scarves, holding what appear to be small knives as they gesture toward the cash register. Store owner Zhen Yang speaks on a cordless phone as he moves slowly back toward a small office. That's when he pulls out a small can and releases a torrent of bear spray on the would-be thieves, sending one running out of the store. The second man remains in the store and confronts Yang behind the counter, but Yang is not prepared to back down. He throws a chair at the remaining would-be robber and then throws the man over the counter. As the man dangles over the counter, Yang delivers the final humiliating blow: a spanking as his pants slowly slide off his hips. "I just want to protect myself, a customer and my life," Yang told CTV Ottawa. "They had a knife. It was scary to me." He said the bear spray was all he had on hand to defend himself. On Wednesday, customers were divided on whether Yang was wise to fight back. "It's hard to decide," said customer Robert St. George. "I mean, you hand over your labour, all of the money you make. If you don't teach them a lesson they will rob them." Customer Paul Boucher, meanwhile, said Yang could have been hurt. "He could have been stabbed," Boucher said. "I would have given him his money." Gatineau Police Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay said it's rare for police to see a potential victim fight back. "It's not something we recommend," Lemay said. "But the Criminal Code does allow people to defend themselves and make citizen's arrest. This is what happened." While one man got away, the other was arrested and charged with armed robbery.
