C/U Elephant's eye W/S Ulloor Bala Subramania Swamy temple SCRIPT A group of experts gathered at the Ulloor Bala Subramania Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Tuesday, to trim the tusks of 43-year-old temple elephant, Karthikeyan. Veterinary doctor Dr. T. Rajeev said that Karthikeyan's tusks, measuring 107 cm (42 inches) on the left and 112 cm (44 inches) on the right, were too long and heavy for him. Growing at an annual rate of 10 cm (4 inches), the elephant's tusks could lead to the elephant suffering complications if not trimmed. The elephant's caretakers invited one of Kerala's most celebrated elephant beauticians, Vinayan Raghavan, who trimmed 40 cm (16 inches) off the tusks and used tools to mould it into the shape of a jasmine bud.
