A foundering sailboat has been lost to the depths, but the French sailor and his cat are safe and sound. "La Chimere" was headed for California when strong winds and waves laid those plans to waste. The sailor sent out a distress signal that was picked up by the U.S. Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders dispatched an airplane and cutter in response. As the plane made contact with the French mariner, he reported, "he had no rudder or rigging and was taking on heavy seas." The Coast Guard then got hold of a commercial vessel in the vicinity which dispatched a ship of its own to complete the rescue. In video released online, the sailor can be seen balancing on his small ship's bow and holding on for dear life as the waves bring him and his cat closer and closer to the much larger Tor Viking. Finally, he leaps headfirst onto the deck—cat in tow. A successful rescue amidst a violent sea.
