There were two events here, a downhill and a cross country. This video is from the Women's Cross Country. Videos from the Men's Cross Country and the Men's and Women's Downhill will follow soon. The Cross Country start line was moved to the middle of Windham to honor the fighting spirit of the town that was completely flooded by hurricane Irene less than a year ago. Saturday morning and the women cross country racers lined up for the 6th world cup race of the season. The downtown start added a mile to the first lap, and with temperatures rising into the 80s at race time, the ladies knew they had a rough road ahead. After only two lap it was looking like the only drama in this race was the contest for second place. Home grown favorite Georgia Gould, who lives in Colorado now but grew up less than an hour from Windham, surged to a 30 second lead over Canadian Catherine Pendrel and the Czech rider Katerina Nash. American Lea Davison from nearby Vermont was another minute behind in 6th place, challenging for a top five finish and a trip to the podium. Nash stayed right on Pendrel's rear wheel, but the Canadian front runner wasn't giving an inch. One lap to go and Gould had added another ten seconds to her lead. The crowd was with her all the way. Davison gained a few seconds on Gould as she moved into fifth position. It was looking good for the American team. Then, with less that 50 meters to go and the riders hidden from the cameras and the crowd, the unthinkable happened. Gould's rear tire had gone flat, snatching her first world cup victory form her with the finish line in sight. She lost precious seconds attempting to fix the flat and ended uyp running across the finish line ten seconds behind Pendrel for third place. Gould made a statement with this race. She may be ranked 15th in the world, but she is a serious contender for Olympic gold later this summer in London. You can see more bike racing on the RadXSports You Tube channel.
