Country Liberals justice spokesman John Elferink was in Darwin yesterday speaking to the media about tougher laws on alcohol-fuelled violence when a man approached him from behind and kicked him in the leg. Mr Elferink, a former policeman, responded by attempting to apprehend him. It is alleged two other men from a nearby pub approached the politician and wrestled with him. Police have also charged one of those men with aggravated assault. Mr Elferink said he would do the same thing if faced with a similar situation. "I got involved because I think it's part of my personal civic duty," he said. "I'm also six feet tall and fairly robust and probably better equipped than a lot of other people to get involved in these sorts of things and it's a judgement call. "I could've continued to wrestle with this bloke yesterday but I chose to let him go." The Irish national was released on bail this morning and is due to face court in September.
