Bryant was two assists shy of a triple-double with a career-high 40 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. O'Neal had 39 points and 20 rebounds in his eighth 20-20 game of the season. They fell one point shy of becoming the 10th pair of teammates to score 40 points in the same game. "On any given night Kobe and I can score," O'Neal said. "Kobe's a great player and he really showed it tonight." That was particularly true tonight, when Glen Rice was held to six points and the Lakers faced a 12-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. "It was a high-scoring game and we needed points obviously," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Glen didn't seem to get going really in the game at all to help us out and we needed scoring in certain in and out patterns. And Shaq had the inside part of the game and Kobe had the outside part going at the start of the second half." Los Angeles matched the 1969-70 New York Knicks, the 1981-82 Boston Celtics and 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the third-longest winning streak in NBA history. The 1971-72 Lakers hold the NBA record with 33 straight wins. "We don't think about it very much," Bryant said. "We just keep plugging away. We keep going from day to day and let them pile up." The Lakers, who also put together a 16-game run from December 11-January 12, have not lost since a 105-81 setback at San Antonio on February 1. They have reeled off 10 straight home wins and remained four games ahead of Portland in the race for the NBA's best record. Chris Webber scored 24 points, Predrag Stojakovic added 22 and Vlade Divac contributed 15 and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who had their four-game winning streak stopped. "We though we we could have done some things against this team," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We thought that our guys could score and for the most part, they played their tails off. We lost to the best team in the league here and had a real chance to win the game." Sacramento failed to take advantage of Seattle's loss to Toronto earlier in the day and remain one game behind the SuperSonics for the seventh spot in the Western Conference. The Kings led 84-76 entering the final period but Los Angeles went on a 21-5 run to take its first lead of the game. O'Neal's basket with 4:12 left provided a 95-91 advantage. "We stopped moving the ball," Divac said. "We were getting the ball to C-Webb and moving it around, but I think in the fourth quarter we just stopped moving the ball. We stood around and let them play defense." Sacramento tied the game twice, the last time at 100-100 on Stojakovic's jumper with 1:20 remaining. After a timeout, O'Neal made a layup and added a free throw. He missed the second one, but Bryant was there for the dunk and a free throw for a three-point play for a six-point cushion with 28 seconds left. "They played us very tough," Bryant said. "This game showed a lot about our character. Every time we got back into the game they kept hitting big shots. We had to get the win. I think that we're all tired because we had a couple of days off, and that missed up our rhythm. We had to come and get in tune and suck it up." Jason Williams hit a 3-pointer as the Kings cut the deficit in half but Bryant made two free throws. Stojakovic nailed another 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left before Derek Fisher made one of two free throws and time expired. "When we play our game, like we did in the first three quarters, we can play with anybody," Divac said. "But the Lakers are the best team in the league, and obviously they controlled the temmp in the third quarter. It could have gone either way, but they just makde a couple of good plays." Robert Horry and Brian Shaw were the only other Lakers to score in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively. Los Angeles shot 47 percent (46-of-98) from the field and held a 59-33 edge in rebounding. Corliss Williamson scored 13 points and Jon Barry added 10 for the Kings, who shot 48 percent (41-of-85) and were outscored, 80-44, in the paint.
