  • description: I'll See You With A New Leader Next Week: Albanese teases Pyne about his insistence that Abbott will retain leadership. 'I can't rule out a leadership challenge': One of Tony Abbott's closest allies says he doesn't know whether PM has support of his party... and then blames gaffe on being tired Leader of the House Christopher Pyne doesn't know if PM still has support Later said his comments were a slip of the tongue because he was 'tired' Mr Abbott's supporters believe he should dump his chief of staff They reportedly think axing Peta Credlin will save his own position Three Liberal Ministers have reportedly confirmed a leadership spill Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull had meeting with PM Was reportedly left 'underwhelmed' by the PM's response to crisis One of Tony Abbott's biggest supporters has said he is unable to confirm whether the Prime Minister still has the numbers to retain leadership if there is a ballot in Canberra on Tuesday. During in an appearance on the Today Show on Friday morning, Education minister and Leader of the House Christopher Pyne revealed he is not able to 'rule out' a Liberal spill. He later put his comments down to a slip of the tongue because he was ‘tired’, during a second interview on Sky News once he had returned to his home city of Adelaide. 'At the first available opportunity I've come straight to your studios from the airport, I am clearing up what I think is an unfortunate misinterpretation of remarks that I made this morning,' he said. He said he made 'entirely unremarkable comments' on the Today Show. 'Perhaps because I'm usually so ebullient, because it was six o'clock in the morning and I was tired rather than effusive and ebullient maybe people have misinterpreted my position,' he said. When asked on Friday morning if he thought there would be a vote on the Liberal party leadership by Today's host Karl Stefanovic, Pyne said: ‘I don’t know well there could a vote every Tuesday… I don’t know if there will be a vote on Tuesday.’ ‘My job is to find out what my colleagues are thinking… I’ve been talking to people, obviously there are some people who think there should be a vote,’ he added. ‘I can’t rule it out. I can tell you this though I will not be moving a vote on Tuesday in the party room.’ Probed by Stefanovic on whether the Prime Minister still has the numbers to retain leadership, Pyne said: ‘I assume the party room knows the worst thing we could possibly do is change the leadership now we have to support the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Tony Abbott will reportedly face a leadership challenge on Tuesday in Canberra 'I can't speak for all of my colleagues in a secret ballot and it's obviously very hard to do so.’ Senior Labor figure Anthony Albanese, who was also on the show, retorted: ‘When you start having senior people who can’t say that the Prime Minister has the numbers then it’s over.’ Meanwhile, Mr Abbott has reportedly been told to sack his controversial chief of staff Peta Credlin or face losing his leadership. Supporters of the PM want him to ditch Ms Credlin in order to stop a Liberal spill that could result in Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull being appointed as the party's new leader, theFinancial Review reports. Mr Abbott is reportedly facing a leadership challenge from a number of disgruntled MPs in Canberra on Tuesday. Three Liberal Ministers reportedly confirmed the spill to Sky News. It has also emerged Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull confronted Mr Abbott about his leadership woes in a closed-door meeting this week. In the private meeting Mr Turnbull reportedly told the PM he had nothing to do with the backbenchers calling for a spill, Fairfax Media claims. However, a source claimed Mr Turnbull was left 'underwhelmed' by the PM's reply when he was asked how he was going to get out of the crisis. However, Mr Abbott remains confident of remaining leader despite backbench concerns about policy missteps and poor opinion poll results. Mr Abbott doesn't expect a spill will happen and certainly won't call one himself, saying it would just be a 'distraction'. Liberal frontbencher Andrew Robb says a leadership spill next week would show the government to be a 'bunch of amateurs'. Mr Robb admitted the prime minister and ministers had received the message from backbenchers and the public that there should be no more policy 'surprises'. Mr Robb said the fact cabinet had spent 11 hours this week looking over what went wrong and right in 2014 and Mr Abbott had personally spoken with most MPs over the past fortnight proved the government was listening. In another indication of his willingness to change, Mr Abbott revealed backbench policy committee heads will now get regular chances to meet with ministers.
