  • description: A gruesome yet powerful anti-smoking campaign has been launched by the government with the aim of forcing more people into quitting. It includes an advert highlighting the damage cigarettes do as fumes travel through arteries and veins into the brain, often causing dementia and strokes. Smokefree Health Harms is spearheaded by Public Health England with the aim of showing smokers the harm done to the human system by arsenic and cyanide -- just some of the dangerous chemicals present in cigarettes. 'We know about the serious effect smoking has on the heart and lungs but smokers need to be aware of how much potential damage is being done to the brain and other vital organs through toxins in cigarettes entering the blood,' said England's chief medical officer, Professor Sally Davies. 'Smoking is the major cause of premature death, with one in two smokers dying prematurely from smoking-related diseases, and it is extremely worrying that people still underestimate the health harms associated with it. The TV advert shows a man at the end of his work shift having a cigarette, before vivid CGI shows the effect the smoke has on the major organs of the body. It will run on television channels from tomorrow. While quitting may seem like a tremendously steep uphill battle for some smokers, the benefits of doing so will essentially reverse the damage suffered to internal organs, Dame Sally said. She added: 'However, it is not all doom and gloom for smokers looking to quit this New Year. Within five years of stopping smoking, your risk of stroke can be reduced to the same as a lifetime non-smoker.' Using the NHS' Smokefree website, smokers are being encouraged to use a range of digital features including an app, daily email programme, and Quit Kit.
