The movie narrates the tale of Riggan Thomson, best known to the public as Birdman - the superhero he once played in a series of films. He hopes to re-establish himself as a serious actor by mounting his own dramatic production on Broadway. With self-doubt hindering the project, Thomson also finds himself threatened by the presence of a high-profile, egotistical movie star in his cast. Inarritu was nominated for the award alongside Richard Linklater ("Boyhood"), Bennett Miller ("Foxcatcher"), Wes Anderson ("The Grand Budapest Hotel") and Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game"). Alejandro G Inarritu won the best director trophy at the 87th Academy awards for whimsical dark comedy Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The comedy is a first for Inarritu, 51, who is, otherwise, known for his serious dramas like Amores Perros, 21 Grams,Babel and Biutiful. The director earlier won the Best Original Screenplay trophy that he shared with co-writers Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr and Armando Bo. The film is a visually complex story that was shot mostly in long shots that were blended later to give the feeling of continuity and required maximum dedication from its actors, cinematographer and Inarritu. "This is like a slow motion kind of moment in my life," Inarritu said in his acceptance speech. Birdman tells the story of Riggon Thomson, a jaded movie star who is otherwise famous for having played superhero Birdman on-screen. Thomson, still dying to achieve the critical acclaim that eluded him in his younger days, decides to mount an ambitious Broadway play but things take a bizarre turn when his superstar ego and self doubt collide. The Mexican helmer was previously nominated for Best Director and picture in 2006 for Babel. Birdman's other win of the night was in cinematography. Birdman was a long-gestating story that Inarritu decided to shoot when his project Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio got delayed. The actor is back to Revenant with DiCaprio with the film slated to release later this year. He was also previously nominated for “Babel.” The Mexican-born director has been hailed for his craftsmanship in “Birdman,” which gives the sensation of having been filmed in one continuous shot. The film stars Michael Keaton as an aging blockbuster movie star seeking to restore his reputation — and bolster his ego — by mounting a serious Broadway play. The other nominees were Wes Anderson, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”; Richard Linklater, “Boyhood;” Bennett Miller, “Foxcatcher;” and Morten Tyldum, “The Imitation Game.” The 87th Academy Awards are airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with host Neil Patrick Harris. Alejandro G. Iñárritu made history in 2006 by becoming the first Mexican director to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director, that time for his drama Babel. On Sunday night at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Iñárritu finally won the award, thanks to the comedy Birdman, making it two years in a row that a Mexican-born director has taken home the Oscar. Birdman beat out Richard Linklater's epic Boyhood, in what most observers said was a too-close-to-call race entering the Oscars. After the win was announced, Iñárritu shared a hug with Linklater, seated across the aisle to his left. He continued that theme of spreading the love in his acceptance speech, acknowledging the achievements of his fellow nominees. "Our work only will be judged, as always, by time," he said after taking the stage. (mexico) Birdman stars Michael Keaton as a former big-screen superhero struggling to rejuvenate his career and fill some personal emptiness as he prepares to star in a Broadway play. It's a film that's alternately touching and hilarious as Keaton's character tries to manage his own ego, aging and personal life. It also features no shortage of cinematic mastery from Iñárritu; 95% of the film appears as if it was one long, continuous shot.
