The entire incident was caught on surveillance camera. John Vescio, a New York State Police senior investigator, was filling up his tank along the Hutchinson River Parkway last Tuesday when the crash happened. The driver of the vehicle that crashed had gone into diabetic shock, causing the collision. Vescio ran away just as the fire started, but he quickly returned to rescue the driver from his burning car. Vescio then ran back to his own burning car to secure his gun and grab a first-aid kit. Spare ammunition in the trunk never ignited. "I think John did a very heroic thing. I think he starts off as a civilian, he becomes a victim, and then his police training kicks in and he actually saves somebody's life," said New York State Police Maj. Keith Corlett. Vescio says he's not a hero. The unidentified driver remains in the hospital and is expected to survive.
