  • description: A father pushing a stroller with two young children has been filmed hurling abuse at a young woman on a Melbourne bus. Melbourne stand-up comedian Mike Nayna, 28, filmed how an argument stemming from backpackers singing on a bus escalated to a full-blown racist verbal attack with threats of violence. Mr Nayna was on a connecting bus on the Frankston train line about 10.30pm on Sunday, November 11, when he witnessed the abuse. A young French woman among a group of backpackers started singing a French song, prompting a woman at the front of the bus to begin swearing at them and shouting "Aussie Aussie Aussie!" Mistaking the chant as a sign of playfulness, the Frenchwoman and her friends then began singing even louder. Mr Nayna said an "obviously drunk" man then began a rant about how much he hated black people. "He just wanted an excuse to yell, and everyone was egging him on," he told ninemsn. "Pretty much all the French girls were white, and there was just me who was brown and another dark guy on the bus." The video shows another man with a stroller and two young children call the French woman a 'c---' and order her off the bus. "At this point all the French girl had done was sing a song and yell 'You're crazy' back to them while she was being abused," he said. "He went on a tangent about protecting his wife, he was just making it up so he had an excuse to be angry." The video captures the sound of a window being smashed after the man steps off the bus. It was not clear how the window was broken. "I heard a few bangs and a smash, and he was standing outside the bus shouting 'Come on, come on'," Mr Nayna said. He posted the footage on YouTube this Sunday in the hopes the abusers would realise the gravity of their actions. "It's almost like they created this thing in their minds that it wasn't. They were working themselves up to scapegoat this girl," he said. "I want the video to get back to them. It annoyed me that they went home and nothing happened." A replacement bus was brought along soon after but Mr Nayna said many passengers were reluctant to get onto the new bus with the two men. Mr Nayda, whose parents are Dutch and Maldivian, said he uploaded the video to draw attention to racism in Australia. "Although we like to think we live in a culturally inclusive society, sadly this kind of stuff isn't that uncommon," Mr Nayna said in the YouTube video. "I know I've copped my share for being brown, and all of my ethnic friends have a story or two. "It's a thing in this country, and let's not pretend it's not."
