  • description: As the executions of Bali Nine pair Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan approach, a band of Australian entertainment figures have called on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to personally bring the men home. The clip features noted Australian actors, directors and television personalities including Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton demanding more be done to spare the men from the firing squad. “Mr Abbott, please do your best to get these boys home and off execution row,” veteran actor Bryan Brown says in the video. “I’m an Australian, and I stand for mercy,” Rush adds. Others demand Mr Abbott travel to Jakarta and demand the men be returned to Australia. “Tony, if you had any courage and compassion, you’d get over to Indonesia and bring these boys home,” noted actor Brendan Cowell says. The video urges Australians to use the hashtag #saveourboys to build further support for Chan and Sukumaran, who are facing execution over a 2005 drug smuggling attempted in Bali. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she was aware of the video’s circulation. “Clearly, if travelling to Indonesia would make a difference, we would have gone there,” she told Karl Stefanovic on TODAY. “We take the very best advice from our people in Indonesia, who are in Jakarta, who are part of a high-level sustained campaign to seek a stay of execution. “If there was any indication being in Indonesia would help, of course we would be there.” Ms Bishop said Mr Abbott had personally spoken to his Indonesian counterpart to seek to spare the Australians’ lives. “The Prime Minister has spoken to President [Joko] Widodo on numerous occasions, he saw him recently in Singapore,” she said. “We have made representations across every level, across every sector of the Indonesian government and we’ll continue to do so.” There has been no confirmation of the time of the men’s executions, but it is understood the pair’s families have been told to say their last goodbyes by 2pm on Tuesday.
