Lightning hits the Shard, Chelsea visitors soaked and hailstones batter Britain: There must be a bank holiday coming up . . . The Bank Holiday weekend will be a washout for parts of Britain, with showers on the way despite temperatures of up to 21C. Saturday will be the worst day of the weekend for rain, but it will also be wet on Sunday for the Midlands, North and South-West of England. However, Monday is expected to be drier overall - with the best of the conditions for the duration of the weekend forecast to be in the South-East. This morning in the West torrential rain flooded roads and rail lines spelling misery for people setting off for work and the school run, while this afternoon the nation was ravaged by thunderstorms in some places. In Chichester, a terraced home was set on fire after a lightning strike blasted a chimney which split at about 1pm. The force blasted windows out of the red brick home and tore tiles from the roof. The strike was so powerful that Jennifer Lamont, who was walking past, was thrown off her feet. Rain was so fierce in some areas that it loosened the soil and trees - their branches heavy with spring blossom - crashed down onto roads and a rail line. The wet weather comes after Britons basked in the hottest day of the year on Monday with a high of 26.3C (79.3F) recorded at London Heathrow Airport. Today, the Met Office placed Wales and the whole of the South and Midlands of England under a yellow 'be aware' severe weather warning for rain. And the Environment Agency had eight flood alerts out for the West in areas around High Wycombe, Reading, Newbury, Basingstoke and Winchester. There was flash flooding in Wymondham, Norfolk, which saw a tractor called to help pull out a car that had become submerged in flood water. Manston near Canterbury received nearly half a month's worth of rain in just a day as Kent bore the brunt of a storm front that included thunder and hail. The Met Office recorded that 27.6mm (1.1in) of rainfall fell - more than half the average amount of rainfall for a month. The village, which includes Kent International Airport, received the highest rainfall in the UK as Kent suffered the worst of the storms in the South-East. Yet forecasters said they were expecting up to 40mm (1.6in). However, as more rain is predicted it could get up to 30mm (1.2in) by the end of the day. At London Heathrow Airport 6.8mm (0.3in) of rain fell within an hour from about 2am. And in Norfolk there was about 13mm (0.5in) around the same time. A Met Office spokesman said: 'These figures are not exceptional in the grand scheme of things. 'But we are still talking about quite a lot of rain, especially for this time of year. Kent is normally a very dry place. 'So for one area to get 27.6mm in such a short time, when 51.1mm is the average for an entire month, is pretty unusual.' Meanwhile, 20 firefighters battled a house fire after the building was struck by lightning during torrential rain in Stewkley, Buckinghamshire. The roof of the two-storey detached house suffered significant damage following the strike, with smoke and water spreading through to the first floor. It was not known if anyone was in the house at the time of the incident but a fire service spokesman said no-one was injured. Firefighters were also called to a house in Woodley, Berkshire, after it was hit by lightning at around 2.15pm today. And drivers found one of the main roads into Newbury, Berkshire, was closed this morning because a huge sinkhole had opened up. Thames Valley Police set up diversions after the 3ft deep cavern appeared, sparking fears that the rest of the carriageway might crumble and collapse. More than an inch of rain fell in many areas of the South in just a few hours early today, and some of the worst hit roads were in Kent and Sussex. Rail passengers faced disruption of up to an hour because of a tree which fell across the train track at Dorking, Surrey. Met Office forecaster Nicky Maxey told MailOnline: 'Tomorrow, in the South East it's going to fairly dry and temperatures could be 20C. But further north it's patchy rain and cooler into the North-
