Humbled 4-0 by Brazil in Singapore last month, and still looking to shake off the effects of a poor World Cup, a full-strength Japan produced by far the best display of manager Javier Aguirre's fledgling reign. Australia should present a sterner test in Tuesday's friendly in Osaka. Japan tore into Honduras, and was three goals ahead by halftime. Maya Toshida opened the scoring from close range after nine minutes, an inspired Keisuke Honda doubled the lead five minutes before halftime from Yasuhito Endo's sweeping pass, and Endo scored a powerful third a minute before the break. Any flickering Honduras hopes were extinguished two minutes after the restart when Takashi Inui struck home the first of his pair. Substitute Yohei Toyoda added a fifth after some excellent work by Honda, and Inui completed the rout with a tap-in. It could have been worse for Honduras but for some fine saves by goalkeeper Donis Escobar.
