ONE News understands the strict rule came into force at Maidstone Intermediate after two students were given detention for hugging a friend. "What we have said to the children is that as a day to day way of going about greeting and farewelling each other, it's not ok," Principal Richard Patterson told ONE News. Information about the ban was posted on the school's online notice board yesterday, using the case of the two girls given detention. It warns students to respect each other's personal space, and Patterson told ONE News the girls had been warned before. However, the mother of one of the girls told ONE News they were hugging a friend from another school who they had not seen for some time. She said cannot understand how it is possible to invade someone's personal space when the hug is wanted, and said the girls were told by the school the hugging may make other pupils feel left out. Educational psychologist Fiona Ayres said the move to ban hugging may be justified. "I think it's fair for schools to put some boundaries around it," she said. "Students could for example hug when they arrive at school to greet each other at the beginning of the day, they may also hug at the end of the day." Patterson said there may be some slackening of the rules in some cases. "If a child is upset, if a child is leaving the school for a particular reason for a length of time and we feel the hug is appropriate, yes," he said. Schools in other countries have outlawed hugging in the past, and it has also been frowned upon at nearby Fergusson Intermediate.
