- description: Soccer fans in Istanbul interrupted the moment of silence for victims of the Paris terrorist attacks at a soccer match between Greece and Turkey on Tuesday. Reuters reports the silence at the stadium was broken by chants and a chorus of boos from spectators before the game began at Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium. An AFP photographer and a Reuters correspondent said fans chanted “Allahu Akbar” or “God is great,” although it is difficult to make out what is being chanted in videos that have surfaced on social media. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and the Greek leader Alexis Tsipras attended the match together as part of on-going efforts to ease the deep-seated tensions between the neighbouring countries. The Turkish team’s manager, Fatih Terim, told the Independent, “Our fans should have behaved during the national anthems and during the one minute silence.” The match ended in a 0-0 score. This was the first time the two rivals had met in the last eight years. Some soccer teams in Europe have paid tribute to the 129 people who died in the November 13 terror attack in Paris. The Football Association in England suggested supporters learn the words to the French national anthem for their game against France on November 17. As a further sign of respect, Wembley Stadium’s arch was lit up in the blue, white and red of the French flag. Soccer fans in Turkey have disrupted similar tributes. In October, a game between Iceland and Turkey in Konya started with a minute of silence for the victims of the Ankara bombing. The deadliest terrorist attack in Turkey’s history killed more than 100 people, many of them attending a rally held by left-leaning groups. The Washington Post wrote the jeers at the stadium demonstrated the deep divisions within the country where “not everyone in the country is sympathetic to those who perished.” ✋ About the video / Community guidelines ✋ This footage is NOT intended to be violent or glorify violence in any way.
