The ship did not seem to slow as it approached the shore, and plowed into land as beach-goers scrambled out of the way. Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed the incident, as reported by local media, saying the ship and its crew had been carrying out a routine training exercise, adding that beach landings were a normal procedure, but that it was unclear what beach-goers were doing on the Baltic Sea shore on a warm day in August. No beachcombers were harmed in the training exercise, the ministry confirmed.
