The whale which has been floating between Rottnest and the WA coast for some time, was surrounded by sharks at the time. Photographs taken from the Seven News helicopter show the man sitting on top of the carcass. Surf Life Saving WA warned several tiger sharks and a white shark were feeding on a whale between Rottnest and Fremantle at 1.30pm. The man was taken back to his boat after people on a nearby vessel alerted him to the sharks in the water. A Department of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said the 12m long animal was currently the responsibility of the Fremantle Port Authority. She said the carcass was not expected to come ashore for some time. “The way the winds are blowing it will probably stay in that ocean space for some time,” she said. Department of Fisheries regional manager Tony Cappelluti described the man’s behaviour as irresponsible. “If sharks were feeding on that whale carcass when he swam over then that type of behaviour is highly risky,” he said. “It potentially could have had some critical consequences, not only for the person but also for the witnesses and other people that would have had to assist. Ninety-nine per cent of the population would see that behaviour as irresponsible.” It is understood a number of people were filming the carcass when the man climbed on to it. Mr Cappelluti said the man should not have entered the water even if he could not see any sharks at the time. “It is very risky to enter the water around that type of large food source because even if you can’t see sharks it’s highly likely the carcass is attracting them from a long way away,” he said. “Irrespective of some type of adrenaline rush or whatever you’re trying to get out of performing that type of act, it’s highly risky.” The department recommends people stay out of the water if they can see whale carcasses, blood or large schools of fish nearby.
